How do I know Avvi finished rather than gave up?

A finished request ends with Avvi saying what it did. A stalled one leaves the last message describing what it was about to do.

A finished request ends with Avvi telling you what it did, in the past tense, naming the thing it changed.

A request that stalled ends differently: the last message describes what is about to happen, or reports an error, or asks you something you have not answered.

Reading the last message is the whole test. Nothing else needs opening.

Before you begin

Scroll to the bottom of the conversation rather than judging from the middle. Long requests produce several messages.

Know what you asked for, so the report can be compared against it.

Read the last message

  1. Look at the final message in the conversation.
  2. If it says what was done, the request finished.
  3. If it describes what will happen and waits, nothing has run and it needs your reply.
  4. If it reports an error, the request stopped there.
  5. If it asks you a question, answer it in the same conversation.

Asking Avvi directly is always available. Did that finish? in the same conversation gets a straight answer.

Good to know

Some changes are reported as done and still take a few minutes to appear. Waiting before chasing is usually right.

A request covering several things reports on each. Fewer results than you asked for means it stopped partway rather than finished.

Verify it worked

Check the thing itself where you can, particularly for anything about your own mailbox or computer.

Give it a few minutes before deciding nothing happened.

If something doesn’t look right

If the last message describes an action rather than reporting one, reply to confirm or to cancel. It has been waiting.

If it reports an error you do not understand, quote it back and ask what to do next.

If it did part of what you asked, say what is missing in the same conversation.

If you cannot tell either way, ask Avvi to send the question to your IT team.
