Why did Avvi tell me to contact my administrator?
The message means your account is not allowed to do that, not that the request was wrong. Avvi can pass the request to whoever manages your IT.
Avvi says “You do not have permission to perform this action. Please contact your administrator for access.” when your account is not allowed to do the thing you asked for.
The request was understood. Nothing was typed wrongly and nothing is broken. Permission is the only thing missing.
The message is frustrating because it names neither the person to contact nor what to ask them for. Both are answerable.
Symptom
Avvi declines a request and points you at your administrator.
The same wording appears in a few forms, including one about a feature not being enabled for your organisation. All of them mean the same thing.
Cause
Access in Avvi is granted per group rather than per person. Your administrator decides which groups can do what.
Anything not switched on for your group is refused, which is why a colleague may be able to do something you cannot.
Avvi does not name the specific permission you are missing. It also never shows you the support address it uses, so the message cannot tell you who to contact.
Fix
- Ask Avvi to send the request to your IT team. For example: please pass this to my IT team.
- Say what you were trying to do and why you need it. That detail goes with the request.
- Wait for your IT team to come back to you.
Avvi confirms with “Your request has been sent to the support team. They will review your request and contact you shortly.”
If something doesn’t look right
If Avvi replies that support escalation is not configured for your organisation, it cannot pass the message on. Contact your IT team the way you normally would.
If you were able to do this yesterday and cannot today, your group’s access has probably changed. Mention that when you ask, because it is useful information.
If you are certain you should have access, say so in the request. Being told the permission is expected saves your IT team a step.
FAQ
Q: Who is my administrator?
A: Whoever manages your company’s Microsoft 365. That may be your own IT team or an outside provider.
Q: Can Avvi tell me which permission I need?
A: No. The message is deliberately general. Describe what you were trying to do instead.
Q: Does this mean my account has a problem?
A: No. The account is fine. Only the permission for that action is missing.
