Which time zone a scheduled action runs in
A scheduled action uses the time zone on your profile, and falls back to US Eastern when nobody has set one. Naming a zone in the request overrides both.
Ask Avvi to do something at 22:00 and it has to decide which 22:00 you meant. It uses the time zone set on your profile.
If nobody has set one, Avvi falls back to US Eastern. That happens quietly, so a request made in London can run five hours away from the hour you intended.
Naming a time zone in the request itself overrides both.
How it works
Three things decide the hour, in this order.
A time zone named in the request wins. Saying at 22:00 UK time leaves nothing to interpret.
If the request names none, Avvi uses the time zone on your profile under Regional settings.
If the profile has never had one set, Avvi uses US Eastern.
Good to know
The profile screen fills the time zone control from your browser the first time you open it. That value is only displayed. It is not saved until you actively choose a zone.
The practical effect is that the screen can look correctly configured while Avvi is still working to US Eastern. This is the most common reason a scheduled action lands at an hour nobody expected.
Do not judge from that message. Ask Avvi to list what is scheduled instead, which reports the time it actually holds.
Verify it worked
Ask Avvi to list what is currently scheduled. The reply gives the time it holds for each item.
Compare that against the hour you meant. If they differ, cancel and re-request with the zone named.
An action that acts on a server on a client network is scheduled against that server’s own local time rather than yours, so check what you intended before assuming it is wrong.
What to do next
Set the time zone on your profile once and this stops happening for every future request. That is covered in Set your time zone and time format.
If you work across several countries, naming the zone in each request is still worth doing. It is unambiguous, and it survives anyone changing a profile setting later.
FAQ
Q: I set my time zone but an old scheduled action still runs at the wrong hour.
A: Changing the profile does not move actions that were already scheduled. Cancel and re-request them.
Q: Does this affect anything other than scheduling?
A: It also affects how times are displayed to you. The scheduling case is the one that causes real harm, because the action actually runs.
Q: My colleague and I scheduled the same thing and got different hours.
A: Each person has their own profile time zone, and Avvi uses the zone of whoever made the request.
