Can Avvi read my email?
Avvi can see information about messages, such as who sent one and whether it arrived. It does not open your mailbox and read the contents of your mail.
No request returns the body of a message in your mailbox. Nothing Avvi can be asked will produce the text of an email you have received.
What it can see is the delivery record: who sent a message, who it was addressed to, its subject line, when it was sent, and whether it was delivered, delayed, rejected or held by the spam filter.
The distinction matters because the useful answers come from the delivery information rather than the contents. Whether an email arrived is answerable without anybody reading it.
How it works
The delivery record covers the journey of a message and its outcome, along with the subject line. It does not include what the message said.
Mailbox settings are also visible: rules that move or forward mail, whether forwarding is switched on, who has been granted access, your automatic replies, and how much space the mailbox is using.
Your calendar events and your Outlook contacts can be listed too, where your IT team has allowed it.
A message held by the spam filter is a separate case. Somebody deciding whether to release it can see its details, because deciding whether it is safe is the point.
Anything Avvi does that changes a setting is confirmed with you first and logged with your IT team.
Good to know
Your IT team already has whatever access their role gives them in Microsoft 365, independently of Avvi.
Whether anybody at your company can ask about your mail at all depends on what your IT team has enabled for their group. It is off unless they turn it on.
What Avvi can do for you specifically is set by your IT team per group, so a colleague may be able to ask for things you cannot.
What to do next
To chase a missing message, tell Avvi who it was from, roughly when, and who it was meant to reach.
To check whether anything is quietly forwarding or moving your mail, ask Avvi what rules and forwarding are set on your mailbox.
To find out exactly what your own account allows, ask Avvi. It will tell you when something is outside what you are permitted.
If you want to know exactly what your organisation has enabled, ask Avvi to pass the question to your IT team.
FAQ
Q: Can Avvi see what a message said?
A: No request returns the body of a message in your mailbox. Subject lines are visible in the delivery record.
Q: Can my manager use Avvi to read my email?
A: No request returns a message body to anybody. Whether somebody can open your mailbox at all is a Microsoft 365 permission, separate from Avvi.
Q: Can Avvi see my calendar or contacts?
A: Yes, where your IT team has allowed it. Avvi can list your calendar events for a period and your Outlook contacts. That is separate from your mail, where it sees the delivery record rather than the messages.
Q: Is what I ask Avvi private?
A: Changes are logged with your IT team, and Avvi says so at the time.
