Avvi only did part of what I asked
A long request can stop partway, leaving some work done and some not. Avvi says how far it got, and checking before you retry stops anything running twice.
A long request can stop partway. Some of the work is done and some is not, which is the most confusing outcome in the product because it looks like success and failure at the same time.
Avvi tells you how far it got. The important thing is to check what actually completed before asking again, so nothing runs twice.
Symptom
Avvi replies with:
“This request required more tool calls than I’m allowed to make in a single turn, so I stopped before finishing.”
The reply then says how many steps completed, and suggests either asking Avvi to continue or narrowing the request into smaller steps.
Cause
A single request can only take so many steps. A request covering several people, or one that needed a lot of looking up before it could act, reaches that point and stops.
Avvi stops deliberately rather than continuing indefinitely. Work already completed is not rolled back.
Fix
- Read the reply to see how many steps completed.
- Ask Avvi what it did, naming the person or client, so you know exactly where it stopped.
- Ask it to continue, or repeat only the part that did not happen.
Ask Avvi to confirm the current state of whatever you were changing. For a permission or an account change, asking what the position is now is more reliable than reading back through the conversation.
If something doesn’t look right
If the reply says it completed steps but you cannot tell which, ask directly. Naming the person and the outcome you wanted gets a clearer answer than asking what happened.
If you believe something ran twice, ask Avvi to pass that to your IT team. Say who was involved and roughly when.
What to do next
Breaking a large request into smaller ones avoids this. One person or one outcome per request is usually enough.
Smaller requests are also easier to check afterwards, which matters more than it sounds when something goes wrong later.
FAQ
Q: Did the part it completed actually happen?
A: Yes. Avvi stopping does not undo what it already did.
Q: Is it safe to ask it to continue?
A: Usually. Avvi works from the conversation rather than from a saved checkpoint, so tell it what already completed if you know, and check the result afterwards.
Q: Why does this happen on some requests and not others?
A: It depends on how many steps the request needs, not on how long the message was.
