Remove mailbox access you granted earlier

One request removes all three permission types at once. It does not cancel a scheduled removal or a scheduled grant, which have to be cancelled separately.

Removing mailbox access takes all three permission types away at once: the ability to open the mailbox, the ability to send as it, and the ability to send on its behalf. Asking for one removal covers all three unless you say otherwise.

Avvi works through them in order and reports what it removed. A permission the person never had is skipped rather than treated as a failure.

Before you begin

Know both email addresses: the mailbox, and the person losing access.

Decide whether you want all three permission types gone or only some. Removing everything is the default and is usually what an audit wants.

Ask Avvi

  1. Open chat.
  2. Say what you want, naming both people. For example: remove sam@example.com’s access to jane@example.com’s mailbox.
  3. To remove only part of it, say which part. For example: remove Sam’s Send As on Jane’s mailbox but leave the access.
  4. Read the confirmation, checking both addresses, then confirm.

Avvi reports what was removed once the job finishes.

Good to know

Removing access changes what somebody can open from now on. It does not undo anything they did while they had it, and mail they already sent stays sent.

Saying remove my access removes your own, using the account you are signed in with. Naming yourself is not necessary.

Verify it worked

Ask Avvi who currently has access to that mailbox. The person you removed should not be listed.

Ask them to close and reopen Outlook. A removed mailbox can linger in the sidebar until it is restarted.

If something doesn’t look right

If the person can still open the mailbox a minute later, ask them to restart Outlook before treating it as a failure.

If they can still send as the mailbox, check whether the removal was limited to one permission type rather than all three.

If access reappears days later, a scheduled grant is the usual cause. Ask Avvi to list the scheduled tasks for that mailbox.

If none of that explains it, open a support conversation from the Help drawer. Include the client name, both email addresses, and what still works.

FAQ

Q: Does this remove mail the person already read or sent?

A: No. Access is about what they can do from now on.

Q: Can I remove only the Send As and keep the access?

A: Yes. Say which permission type you want removed and leave the rest alone.

Q: The removal ran but access came back.

A: Check for a scheduled grant. Removing current access does not cancel one.
